Exploring Nerja: My Journey Through Beaches, Caves, and the Old Town
I remember my first glimpse of Nerja, a picturesque town tucked along the Costa del Sol in Spain.
The sun was dipping low, casting a golden glow over the Mediterranean, and I knew I was in for an unforgettable adventure.
If you’re planning your visit, let me take you through what to do in Nerja – the must-sees, the hidden treasures, and everything in between.
What to do in Nerja – A Guide to Exploring this Charming Spanish Town
1. Bask in the Sun at Nerja’s Best Beaches
Nerja’s beaches are undoubtedly some of the best in Spain. My absolute favorite was Burriana Beach – a long stretch of golden sand bordered by beachside restaurants.
There, I found myself lounging under an umbrella, sipping on a freshly made “tinto de verano.” The atmosphere was lively yet relaxed, perfect for a day of sunbathing and enjoying the sea breeze.
If you’re after something quieter, try Maro Beach. It’s a bit more secluded, surrounded by lush cliffs, and has a wild beauty that truly captivated me. Snorkeling here was incredible, with crystal-clear water revealing a lively underwater world.
2. Discover the Charm of Nerja Old Town
As I wandered into Nerja Old Town, it felt like I had stepped into another era. Narrow, cobblestone streets weaved between whitewashed houses, each adorned with colorful flowers.
The heart of the old town is the Balcón de Europa, a viewpoint offering sweeping vistas over the sparkling coastline. Standing there, gazing at the endless blue, was an experience I’ll never forget. It was a perfect spot to capture some memorable photos.
For a taste of local culture, I visited the small shops lining the streets, where I found handmade ceramics and delicious treats like “mantecados” (a traditional Spanish cookie). The charm of Nerja Old Town was truly in its details – the quiet courtyards, the friendly locals, and the timeless vibe.
3. Visit the Famous Nerja Caves
The Nerja Caves (Cueva de Nerja) were the highlight of my trip. Just a short drive from town, these caves are home to some of the largest stalactites in the world.
I was in awe as I walked through the cavernous rooms, each turn revealing more impressive formations. The guided tour provided fascinating stories about the cave’s history, dating back to prehistoric times.
Just make sure to check the Nerja Caves opening times beforehand – I arrived early in the morning to avoid crowds, and it made for a more tranquil experience.
4. Embrace Nerja’s Culinary Delights
I couldn’t leave Nerja without indulging in its culinary offerings. Restaurante Pinocchio is one of my favourite places to dine in, when in Nerja. I just love their Pizza, Pasta and oh, you must definitely try out the Leg of Lamb!
5. Day Trip to the Nearby Villages
For a day trip, I took a short drive to the village of Frigiliana, often considered one of Spain’s most beautiful towns.
The whitewashed buildings, steep alleys, and sweeping views over the valley were well worth the visit. It added another layer of charm to my Andalusian adventure.
My Tips for Exploring Nerja
- Best Time to Visit: I visited in late spring, which I found perfect for avoiding the summer crowds while still enjoying warm weather.
- Getting Around: Nerja is best explored on foot, especially the old town. I rented a bike for a day to reach the more distant beaches, which added a fun twist to the journey.
Final Thoughts
Nerja left me with memories of sun-soaked days, delicious food, and the genuine warmth of a small Spanish town. Whether you’re here for the beaches, the history, or just to relax, Nerja has something magical for everyone.
